History

Health Resources of Arkansas, Inc. (HRA) is a private, non-profit corporation that provides planning, prevention, treatment and support services in the areas of behavioral health and addiction to alcohol and drugs. It serves children of all ages and adults primarily through community-based services. HRA provides services to adults, adolescents, and children.

HRA was originally established in 1969 as the North Central Arkansas Mental Health Clinic with a budget of $30,000 and three clinics. In 1974, the corporation became a comprehensive program serving ten counties and the name was changed to the North Central Arkansas Mental Health Center, Inc. The service region was an area of sparse population and scarce resources. With that in mind, the center embarked on a mission to provide a comprehensive system of care that was unequaled in rural America. In 1977, the corporation became the first community mental health center to receive a Rural Health Initiative Grant to develop primary health services. Working hand-in-hand with the National Health Service Corps, much needed services were established in areas where none were available. In 1978, the center established a comprehensive substance abuse treatment program and a residential/detoxification program for alcohol abuse was established. Ground-breaking ceremonies for new facilities with local, state and national officials in attendance became common-place in North Central Arkansas. In 1979, due to these and other expansions by the corporation, the center's name was changed to North Arkansas Human Services System, Inc. to reflect the expansion of services beyond mental health.

The alcohol abuse treatment program, now known as the Wilbur D. Mills Treatment Center, became the first free-standing, licensed medical detoxification program in Arkansas. Located in Searcy (White County), the Mills' campus houses an array of services related to addiction treatment.

The established primary care program became a separate corporation in the mid 1980s and was named White River Rural Health Center, Inc. It is the largest community health center in the state.

The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities awarded HRA full accreditation beginning in 1996 and thereafter in 1999, 2002 and 2005. The accreditation is given to those companies whose programs meet or exceed national quality of care standards.

In 2003, in order to better reflect the nature and composition of the company, the name was again changed, becoming Health Resources of Arkansas, Inc. Even though the corporation's name has evolved with the ever-changing profession, one true ideal has remained the same: Serving people is our purpose.
